  • Deadliest Animal: Mosquitoes are responsible for more human deaths each year than any other animal and have caused more deaths than all the wars in history.
  • Vaccine Availability: For most of these diseases, there are no vaccines or treatment. The only way to stop the surge of these diseases is through aggressive mosquito control.
  • Reproduction Rate: A female mosquito can lay as many as 300 eggs at one time and produce up to 3,000 during her life span. Female mosquitoes bite because they need blood to effectively lay their eggs.

  • Zika – While Zika is for the most part relatively mild in the general population, it can be detrimental to pregnant women and their unborn child. It has been linked to microcephaly, a congenital birth defect that causes major neurological problems. Zika was declared a pandemic of North and South America in 2015-2016.
  • West Nile Virus – This viral infection causes flu-like symptoms – fever, headache, tiredness, aches, and a rash that can last for up to 60 days.
  • Dengue – Extremely painful, dengue is a flu like virus that results in aches, fever, vomiting and rash. In extreme cases, dengue can be fatal.
  • Chikungunya – Another flu-like virus, Chikungunya is characterized by extreme joint pain. There is no treatment other than pain medication and waiting out the symptoms.

The diseases mentioned above are just a small sample of the various pathogens carried by mosquitoes.
