Ants seek shelter and resources when they’re scarce. Your home is attractive to ants because it’s warm and has easy access to food and water. Changes in climate, food and water can cause ants to invade your home.
When ants need resources, they send scouts out to find them. Once the scouts locate resources, they bring back more ants to take the resources back to the nest. Prevent more ants from showing up at your house by targeting the scouts before they return to their nest to bring more ants back to your home.
Ants are difficult to get rid of for many reasons. Variables like ant behavior, biology, species, colony size, climate, and nest location all impact how successful pest control is.

Preventing ants from showing up in the first place is the best course of action. There are several measures you can take to lessen the likelihood of ants invading your home.
The best way to kill ants yourself is by getting them quickly with a wet towel or sponge. When scouting, ants walk in a single-file line and leave a pheromone trail. They use this trail to guide more ants to your home. You can disrupt this pheromone trail and prevent ants from following it to your home by cleaning it from beginning to end with a cleaning solution.
Locating ant nests is a difficult, but critical step in getting rid of ants. Ants are attracted to water and food and will congregate in areas where these resources are available.
Start by looking in areas where food or moisture is present. Look near bathtubs, showers, sinks, pantries and kitchens. Ants are also found in attics or on exterior walls. Anywhere with spongy flooring or plumbing issues may be a potential home to ants.
There are two main approaches to pest control, DIY and Professional. Below, we briefly address each approach in order from least to most effective.
We’re often asked how effective natural pest control options are. Natural pest control is the least effective overall and includes options like vinegar, borax, cucumbers, lemon juice, soap, essential oils, cinnamon and bleach. In general, natural options minimally repel a small number of ants and eliminate even fewer.
There is a lot of misinformation out there, so we asked one of our entomologists to shed some light on natural pest control methods.
Soap, vinegar, and bleach only work if you spray them directly on the ant, and won’t provide any protection once they’ve dried. These options don’t eliminate the ants in the nest or make much of a dent in your ant problem at all.
Essential oils like peppermint, patchouli, cedarwood, and others claim to be able to repel or kill ants, but it’s only to a very limited extent. According to our entomologist, there is not much that deters ants. Even if ants do find a scent unpleasant, there is a good chance they will go around it to see if there is anything they DO like beyond it.
Like soap, bleach, and vinegar, essential oils that are capable of killing ants can’t kill more than the few ants who make contact with them and the effectiveness isn’t lasting.
Diatomaceous earth and borax both act as desiccants. Desiccants kill ants by degrading the cuticle around their exoskeleton causing ants to die from dehydration. Borax also contains boric acid which is additionally toxic to ants if they ingest it. The drawbacks? These options are easy for ants to avoid, are easily ruined by weather, take a long time to work, and only impact the very few ants that directly interact with them.
If you choose to take care of ants yourself using store-bought pesticides, you’ll likely encounter the following options: baits, sprays, and granules. These offer better results than natural methods, but they still only provide quick, short-term results. They’re not designed to solve ant problems fully or long-term.
The downsides of store-bought options? Like natural options, they cannot offer the comprehensive approach needed to get rid of ants. Ants are difficult to eliminate and require an approach that’s comprised of the right combinations of products and techniques to be successful.
As if their limited effectiveness weren’t enough, store-bought pesticides can also make ant problems worse. Sound impossible? It's not. Check out our explanation of ant behavior for more information.
Here are some basic uses of common store-bought pesticides:
Use baits in areas ants are likely to appear in search of food and water. Areas can include kitchen cabinets, under kitchen appliances, and moist areas like bathrooms.
Use sprays around common entry points to your home and the exterior perimeter of your home
Sprinkle granules near ant trails around your home and the exterior perimeter of your home.
Remember, store-bought products for ant control will break down easily when they come in contact with the elements. Due to the volume of ants within a colony, ants will quickly overpower the low-grade products you find at the store.
Professional pest control is the most successful pest control option available. Getting rid of ants requires the right combination of tools and knowledge. It takes having the right products to kill ants, techniques to get products back to the nest, and expertise to know how to do this effectively. Professionals have the tools and knowledge needed to get rid of ants. Professionals like Saela.
Here are the different components of our comprehensive Protection Plan and why they help us eliminate ants and other pests successfully.
A customized ant control service plan is more likely to succeed because we account for the different variables of each situation. A one-size-fits-all approach is insufficient. Customized service is a must.
Saela's entomologists develop the training for our service specialists and provide them with ongoing education. Pests and ants adapt. So, our entomologists and service specialists use their expertise to plan and implement the best service for each situation to keep you pest-free. Saela's expert team is a crucial part of how we provide consistently excellent results.
The adage that you get what you pay for is true when it comes to pest control. Other pest control companies use cheap pesticides that don’t work very well. We use the highest quality products available because they last through the elements and they get the job done. Our products are also less toxic than table salt and are human and pet-friendly. You don’t even have to leave your home when we service it.
Ants are persistent and likely to return. Once we’ve eliminated ants, we need to keep them away. The product barrier around your home keeps you protected against pests. Even the highest quality products wear down after about 3 months. We service your home quarterly and offer free reservices as part of our Protection Plan to keep that protective product barrier intact, so you stay pest-free.
Each component we’ve mentioned is valuable, but none is enough to eradicate ants alone. These components are most valuable when they’re used in the right combination.
Wondering what this looks like in action?
As we’ve mentioned, a product must get back to the nest. We know ants are social, that there are a lot of them, and that the queen stays in the nest. If we only kill the ants outside the nest that interact with product, we won’t eliminate an ant problem. There are too many ants, and the queen will just reproduce to replace dead ants.
The solution? We use the ants' social nature against them by using products that act slowly and spread easily. Ants bring these products back to nest and then spread them throughout the colony. Our expert Service Specialists will also utilize additional techniques as needed until the nest is eliminated.
This small example shows why it takes understanding ant behavior, ant biology, professional products, and how to use them together the right way to be successful.
